Web Services - How To Discuss

Web Services

A concept of software and infrastructure supported by several major IT vendors (including Microsoft and IBM) for inter-program communication and application component delivery. The concept of web services considers software as a set of services available on ubiquitous networks using web standards and protocols.

More specifically, a web service is a software component that is accessible by another application (such as a client, server, or other web service) through the use of common and widely available protocols and vehicles, such as hypertext transport (HTTP). Efforts between IBM and Microsoft, supported by other vendors such as Ariba and Iona Technologies, have led to agreement on a set of XML-based standards for defining, discovering and communicating web service interfaces remotely. You understand:

• Web Services Description Language (WSDL) to describe web service interfaces.

• Universal description, discovery and integration (UDDI) as a means for users to publish and discover available web services, their functions and interfaces.

• Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP), which allows an application to call a web service.

See HTTP, .NET, SOAP, UDDI, WSDL, and XML.
