Depending on how often you use them, they can last for decades or at least a few years. I know people who used their Rkenstock until they were 1230 years old. The longer you wear Rkenstocks, the more comfortable your feet will fit. Most insoles are interchangeable, so you can always find a new insole for a small fee.
The upper part of the suede is softer than Rkoflor material, but after prolonged use it tends to stretch and wrinkle. Rkoflor sticks are very soft and easy to maintain and are available in many other colors. I prefer rkoflor because it is cheap and easy to maintain, but suede is also soft and beautiful. (I've never tried leather myself, so I can't tell you.) The real sole has good arch support and is not too hard. Soft soles are considered very comfortable, while high heels are good for high heels (obviously), but can be painful for flat feet.
I have a Rkenstock Boston and a Gizeh (Boston is in suede and Gizeh is in Rkoflor. Both soles are normal). Both are very comfortable, although I prefer Giza because it is easy to run and walk and is good for spring / summer. I recommend Giza or Spartas and my friends say Arizonanas and Graas are great too. If you are not used to using these straps, then Giza and Giza's nails can be annoying at first. I now!
