Meaning of Fill rate & Fill rate Definition

Fill Rate

What does speed mean?

The delivery rate is the number of ad impressions that the ad actually serves outside of the time the ad was requested by the ad server. It can be used to measure any situation where advertising is attempted on the Internet, such as:

  • The number of placements on a website where ads are displayed.
  • The number of times an ad tag successfully shows an ad to a user.
  • The number of ads that the ad network actually places on a website without using standard ads.

Imagine you have 100 billboards all over the city. Your fill rate is the percentage of ads you actually place on those billboards. This does NOT count as the number of ads you sell or the number of posters you receive. So even if you sell 100 billboards but only install 95, your occupancy rate will remain 95%.

Technical information

Rest assured, any ad you want to sell can be sold in one way or another. Unfortunately, this is not the case for most ad networks as for some reason they simply don't have enough ads to fill their site. This is why most ad networks allow you to run standard ads so that the ads that don't sell still have a chance to fill up.

Reasons for less than 100% completion may include:

  • Ads configuration issues Ads may work in some browsers/computers/operating systems, but not all, and because they are difficult to test, they often result in slow .
  • Lag An ad can take so long to load that the user leaves the page prematurely.
  • In the event of a reporting discrepancy, the analytics on the website will count ad serving as soon as the page starts to load, and the ad server will not count the ads until the ad has fully loaded. The time between these two events can be long enough for the user to exit.
  • Ad blockers Some ad blockers block ad networks, not ad views. In these cases, an ad request is made, but the ad cannot be served.

Average speed

When a network has a high fill rate, the effective CPM is generally low (or at least lower than normal). As a result, most advertising agencies have an occupancy rate of 20-30%. AdSense is a notable exception to this rule, as it has such a high number of ads that it typically achieves a 100% fill rate.

Speed Tips for Website Owners

To ensure the maximum number of ads on your site (and therefore the most revenue), always place standard ads on ad networks. In most cases it makes sense to use them for AdSense to make sure you have all your inventory in stock. When merging ad networks, don't use more than three ad networks, as latency can get out of hand.

Remark. Don't take the run rate of the ad networks themselves as they will most likely use the most generous rate for themselves. This means that they measure ad requests down to the last possible millisecond and successfully deliver ads as soon as they start to load. This actually means a lot of missed ads, so always calculate fill rates using your own analytics.

Population tips for ad buyers

When using ad tags to serve rich media, try to keep the K-weight low to increase the number of users who download them before they leave the page. Also, be wary of using too many analytics services in one ad group, as they can cause enough latency (or general outages) to prevent your ad tags from working properly. Our advice is to make sure you have an analytics provider you trust and use them to check fill rates.

Remark. If you're noticing a sudden drop in fill rates, there's likely a problem with your ad that needs to be fixed immediately. Also, keep an eye on the number of alternative GIFs you provide, as they can mask fill percentages.
